-everyone came to watch this!!! It sparked interest in our
sport like few things in recent years. The group of a dozen
plus one went to the specially designed mile starting line
with the weather a bit blustery. You had the sense there was
no politeness to this race when Alan Webb charged to the
lead. He was soon joined by Jacob Gustafson, who cruised
through at 58.4 with the pack in a long line behind him. Webb
and Hall raced together on lap 2 (1:59.1), with the Californian Hall, just
sitting off the Virginian's shoulder. You had the sense that
the pacing momentum was slowing during the third lap, with the
1320 passed in 3:03.2. Both Webb and Ryan looked super, with
Ryan actually moving up to appear to challenge on the back-
stretch. With a bit less than 200 meters to go Alan Webb
simply exploded with a quality of effort and performance not
seen since Jim Ryun at the high school level. Yours truly did
see Ryun run 3:59.1 as a prep in the Compton Invitational in
the mid-1960's (which he did despite getting knocked off on the
infield with 600 to go). Of course he finished twelfth in an
open event that day. We also saw him qualify for the Olympic
team over 1500 meters for the 1964 Olympics, with that miler's
blend of great speed and conditioning that only Webb has shown
me at the HS level in the intervening 30 years. Anyway, back to
the race, with Webb lifting and separating from Hall every stride
during the final 150 meters. John and Sean Jefferson closed in
a super manner to nap second and third in 4:05.54 and 4:07.25
respectively, with Hall certainly not needing to be upset a bit with
his effort this day that had him end up fourth at 4:08.37. With
eight at 4:12 or better for a full mile it was a classic!!!
The race was timed at 1600 Meters, with Webb 3:59.51 at that
point. It will be submitted as a National Federation Record, because
the National HS body has for some reason chosen to not accept
Jim Ryun's 3:58.3 run in a high school meet for a mile from the
1965 season, instead deferring to a 4:03 clocking since that time
for the exact 1600 meter distance. Webb's mark will be submitted
to the National Federation, giving folks something to aim at
for some time!

--interesting event, with the field out very quickly over the first
200, then the pace bogged a bit and the field stacked up at the
400, just under 55. Danny Soule had blazed 1:52.0 in the south
last weekend, with hatch low 1:53's indoors, so something would
develop. Interestingly, it was 22.2 sprinter Asafo-Agyei Raphael
who showed conditioning to to along with the speed, who charged
up and ahead over the final 200 in a great sub 1:52 effort!

--Very good race here also, with another Virginia winner. Yong-Sung
Leal was very tough early on, taking out at 64.2 and 2:12.3 lap points,
with Stephen Haas and Bobby Lockhart, Southerners who moved
from the mile to go after a good time here, up with Leal through a
3:21.0 1200. At 4:29.1 for the 1600 Lockhart grew impatient, cranking
66.4 for the next 400 to come by five laps at 5:35.5. This was getting
interesting as the momentum built. Lap six was 67.6 (6;43.0),with
seven 66.2 (7:49.2) with the prospect of a great time!!! Lockhart was
free and away, with Chandler Goodwin moving up to second at
the bell. A 68 second final 400 gave Lockhart the win, with the
eleventh grader's spirit and effort to be commended. He will do
some big-time damage before his prep career is through!!! His
determination and follow-through on a challenging pace is the
kind of effort that makes prep distance running exciting of late!

--one of everybody's favorite people, Melissa Astete, had a great
day in an event with a stunning field! Melissa had one great attempt
at 13-04.5 after a third clearance effort at 12-06, then a second
try clearance at 13-00 to win and leave a fine field behind.
